Security Camera Night Vision Types – Ir or Dss

Christow Anderson asked:

Many of our customers ask for Infra Red Night Vision Security Cameras. We believe that this is mainly due to the over-frequent use of the term in internet commerce. The main goal you want to reach is : Identification of suspects.

Infra Red LEDs

These days CCTV Dome Cameras are often equipped with in-built infra red LEDs. These point to a centered area in the camera view and illuminate only that area. Any activity in the border or corner areas of the camera view will not be illuminated. Also – CCD Image Sensors of most low cost cameras calculate their overall light sensitivety and thereby the subsequent opening or closing of the auto iris or shutter, by the overall illumination of the camera view. Since the border areas will be completely dark, the iris will open wider in order to receive more light exposure onto the CCD chip.

What now happens is not rocket science; the suspects face, facing the camera in the center view, which is directly illuminated by the infra red already, reflects far too much light right back into the wide open iris. The face will be over-illuminated and not identifyable.

You think that this is exaggerated? The majority of all footage of low cost Security Cameras with inbuilt infra red, after handing over to the police is not being used. Experts at the police department can see at a glance whether CCTV footage has a chance to prevail in court or not.

DSS Night Vision

Another possibility is DSS, which stands for Digital Slow Shuttering. The intelligent electronic in the camera chip will digitally reduce the shutter speed, whilst at the same time avoiding many of the negative side effects of the analog version of doing this. With this technology the existing light can be magnified up to fifty times and higher.

Practically this means that there needs to be ‘some’ light in the area, or distant light shining into the area. With better Security Cameras moon light and sometimes even star light will be sufficient.

For installers to be on the safe side when quoting and commiting to certain abilities of the system; I recommend to use DSS night vision cameras, as long as there is any light source like a street light etc. within 100 yards.

Installing Your Own Cctv System

Edwin Earl asked:

CCTV systems are now been used in an increasing amount of domestic properties. Domestic CCTV systems offer the house holder an extra level of security and many CCTV installations are now been installed by the end user. Many home owners are buying professional DIY CCTV kits or CCTV packages and cutting out the CCTV installation companies, this often means you can install much better quality components for half the price of what you would pay for an installed system.

Installing your own CCTV system is straight forward and can be done in a number of ways. The easiest method is to use ready made RG59 cables that carry the cameras power and video signal to a CCTV DVR, which in turn is connected to your TV via a BNC to Scart connector. A CCTV DVR will allow you to record more than one camera’s images at the same time directly to an internal hard disk, while adding the time and date. The type of DVR you select for your installation will depend on the number of cameras you require or may need in the future, as standard they range form 4-16 cameras. CCTV DVR’s allow you create a split screen so you can see multiple cameras at once or you can just select the camera you are interested in. If you want the feature to connect your DVR to the Internet to allow remote viewing this too is possible. Configuring your DVR to allow you to see your property across the internet is becoming extremely popular and requires a little IT knowledge to configure the Router, Firewalls and your DVR.

Selecting the type of CCTV camera depends on your budget and the quality you desire. An external camera will have an Infra Red distance, this is the maximum the camera could see in darkness, bare in mind that the rating means there and back as the Infra Red has to reflect back to the camera for the image to be visible. Also its worth noting that IR Cameras don’t work too well if they are just pointing at grass, trees or bushes are these are very absorbent. Cheaper cameras usually have a fixed lens, these are the easiest to install but don’t offer the flexibility of a vari-focal lens camera that allows you to change the focal length. A CCTV cameras resolution is measured in TV lines ie a camera with a 540 TVL sensor will generally have a higher resolution that a camera with a 400TVL CCD image sensor. Although the quality of a CCTV camera depends on more that just the TVL rating, the lens, circuitry and build quality can be more determental. Also the best cameras at night use whats called an ICR filter, this is other wise know as a True Day Night Camera and these cctv cameras generally offer up to a 30% increase in image at night compared to non ICR cameras. Buy your cameras with care from a reputable dedicated CCTV supplier as the quality can vary enormously.

To install a system in your own home firstly work out where you would like to put the cameras and how far these points are from the likely location of the CCTV DVR recorder, work our how much cable you will need before you purchase your CCTV Kit to ensure you will have enough to reach your desired location. You will need a drill with a long drill bit, some ladders and just a little common sense!

4k Telepresence and Video Conferencing

L II, Inc. TelepresenceForum.com asked:

“Field of Vision” 4K Telepresence and Video Conferencing

1080p is here. You don’t know what 1080p means? Well it means a monitor with a screen resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels scanned progressively (i for interlaced). At 1080p, you’re talking the best and most graphic High Definition Video publicly available (presently). Pretty neat. Today’s best Telepresence units run video at 1080p and 30 frames per second (fps). Pretty doggone amazing. These hi pixel count monitors are integral to the “Telepresence Experience”. Kinda’ hard to have a telepresent experience on a 15” desktop monitor, but walk into a Telepresence Studio with three 65” (or larger) 1080i plasma monitors and remember those old Memorex commercials – Is it Live, or is it Memorex? You get the idea.

But…. Just over the edge of the horizon and just inside our “Field of Vision” is something that will stretch our human visual senses to their absolute limit.

They’ve already nicknamed it “4K”. 4K stands for 4096 x 2160 pixels. FOUR TIMES the pixel count of today’s 1080p HDTV’s and monitors. FOUR TIMES the vividness of today’s best resolution. Engineers and “people in the know” are calling 4K the most unbelievable thing you or I will ever see. 4K Telepresence and 4K Video Conferencing will take Telepresence and “being telepresent” to a whole new level of lifelike conferences and meetings. How can it fail?

When will all this happen? Check it off your Christmas list for the fall of 2010, just two years away. 4K monitors are already being built and demonstrated today with consumer rollout scheduled for the summer of 2010. 4K Telepresence and lower grade 4K Video Conferencing units will be right behind the consumer rollout on these 4K television monitors. With Cisco and others publicly stating that Home Telepresence will be available in 2009, 4K Telepresence will be just in time for that 4K TV in 2010.

One thing that never changes in today’s “tele” world is that everything’s always changing. What’s new and “best” today, is old news and considered “antique” tomorrow.  Funny, we just said that with HDTV a few years ago….

Bet on 4K, I can “see” it in my “Field of Vision”.

Video conferencing vs. Audio web conferencing

Zaibatt Zaki asked:

Organizations are generally confused whether to use audio web conferencing or video conferencing to communicate with their clients, stakeholders, members and all other relevant individuals. Both types of conferences have their own advantages and disadvantages, and it is essential to analyze the needs and requirements of an organization before choosing on one of these conferences.

Audio web conferencing uses the latest VoIP technology to transmit voice over the internet. This facilitates a better voice clarity and reception. Further, VoIP technology is very cost effective since it converts the voice into packets and then sends it across. This ensures that only the relevant part of the conversation is sent across and the silence part is left behind, thereby saving on the internet charges. Latest equipments such as Cisco conferencing bridge enable the facilitation of an increasing number of members to the conference without affecting its quality. Further, Cisco conferencing bridge offers additional features such as a scheduler and auto dialer to improve the productivity of a conference.

Video conferencing equipment, on the other hand enables the transmission of video images across the internet. This acts as a close replica to a physical meeting, thereby producing similar results at a much lower cost. Video conferencing equipment working on the revolutionary VoIP technology further facilitate the transfer of data, files and presentations during the course of a conference. This is particularly helpful in corporate meetings and meetings with clients who are located at a far away place.

Now, which type of conferencing to choose would depend on the specific requirements of the organization. Audio web conferencing is more suitable to smaller organizations that don’t have a frequent need to conference and do not require transfer of data, files and presentations during the course of the conference. There have been a lot of technological advancements in the field of audio conference, and a lot of new products such as wireless headsets have come up that allow unconstrained mobility during the conference. If there is a frequent need to have conferences with important members such as clients and members then video conferencing would be the ideal choice since it provides a similar atmosphere as that of a real meeting. Moreover, technologically advanced video conferencing equipment such as a high resolution web camera or a TV screen that can supportmultiple members, can further enhance the effectiveness of a video conference.

Since both the conferences have their own advantages, it is advisable to carefully analyze the needs of your organization and then take a decision regarding which conferencing system to set up.

Telepresence "defined"

L II, Inc. TelepresenceForum.com asked:

So….

“Telepresence”.

I get a kick out of seeing the so called “video conferencing experts” struggle to define this simple word. So far the most common and widely available definition of “Telepresence” is from Wikipedia. It states:

Telepresence refers to a set of Technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location.”

That simple sentence says it all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, VC (video conferencing) experts all have opinions gained from their years and years in the VC industry. They’ve been there, done that and have gained all the knowledge required to become wizards of their industry. That same “vast amount of gained knowledge” they’ve amassed is also part of the reason we’ve been waiting for VC to prove itself since the video phone in 1964. Instead of running to a common goal, they’re running in circles. Smart people do that ya’ know.

I think they’ve all missed the point. There, I said it. That’s sure to make more than a few people cringe. Oh well. Here’s another observation. It’s probably not their job to “define” Telepresence anyway. They’re looking so past the point, kind of like a brain surgeon that can’t change a flat tire. They’re thinking it has to do with video conferencing, 3-D, Pepper’s Ghost, video over IP or even 4-D magic. Lenses, lighting, immersiveness, latency, HD, Plasma, Bandwidth, etc. The question lingers – at what point does video conferencing become Telepresence? Is it 70ms latency? Video over IP? HD immersiveness? Right?

Wrong. All wrong.

How about it doesn’t matter? Video conferencing (in all past and future reincarnations) is just a facet of “Telepresence”. 3-D imaging? Another facet. What we watched on historical CNN Election night with the “hologram” camera trick? Another facet.

Simply put: Tele – “to or at a distance” and Presence – “the impressive manner or appearance of a person”. Telepresence. End of story, case closed.

The companies that have figured out that the word “Telepresence” is more about marketing then an actual definition are going to soar, while others that are still trying to define it are going to get kicked to the curb. It doesn’t matter who invented it. It does matter who’s going to capitalize on it. Telepresence in its essence is the boss barking orders via a walkie talkie (or string and cup for that matter). It doesn’t matter if it’s 720i HD at 30 fps, or 3-D Pepper’s Ghost technology, or 300 cameras building a trick hologram. Those methods are just the means to convey Telepresence, not Telepresence defined.

Presently, Cisco is running with the ball because of their TV commercials and Internet play. Marketing 101. They didn’t invent Telepresence, but they’ve been marketing it. They’re not waiting on unified conferencing “Standards”, they’re not waiting on a definition and they’re surely not waiting on anybody or anything. They are forging ahead with their Telepresence related products. Remember, if you believe like I do that Telepresence is not about “video conferencing”, but about “all” the different technologies that can make up “Telepresence”, you can change the tire and get on down the road instead of getting your gray matter mired in the mud thinking up a definition that won’t please all of the people anyway.

Sometimes we’re so smart, we’re stupid.

Just my two cents worth. Take it or leave it.

Personal Uses For Videoconferencing

Jason Cox asked:

If you thought that video conferencing is the domain of business tycoons and their minions, you will have to think again. Sure, business deals are made, partnerships are formed, mergers are discussed, and using the video conferencing technology firms new product launches up. Yet, more and more private parties are discovering the wonderful world of video conferencing.

As a matter of fact, the technology has already been marketed to private parties for a few decades. Who does not remember the videophone that required two parties to have the same setup and then would display the smiling callers face on a screen smaller than the computer screen you are currently looking at? Or take the surge of web cams that seems to find their ways into our nations co-ed dormitories.

Sure, they are often put to a more questionable use, but the ability to send visuals along with audio has been around for quite a while. With the Internet boom of the 1980s, many companies made their money off the new technologies, and even these days many a spam message will contain an invitation to visit the senders webcam broadcast..for a cost, of course.

Yet even so, video conferencing is quickly moving into the private sector, and the most logical places for such a move are the large immigrant populations. Did you know that there are families who have not seen each other face to face for decades?

Children are born, marriages take place, graduations happen, birthday parties come and go and all that family members across the globe see are some after the fact photos or maybe some grainy Internet webcam images that appear to lag eons behind the sound. What better use for video conferencing than to bridge the global gap and bring families together?

Grandparents may now meet their grandchildren when they are born. They may interact with their sons and daughters more often or even at all! Sadly, there are many countries that will not permit expatriates reentry for visits to relatives, and some countries will not consider a citizenship application of a resident alien who has left the country for travel, thus severely curtailing an individuals ability to remain connected to her or his family and friends.

With the use of video conferencing technology, grandchildren who would have never known their doting grandparents and would not have been able to make the connection between the smiling photos and the presents that keep arriving at all the special occasions will now be able to form a personal bond with their elders across the globe.

In addition to the foregoing, families that are brought together by marriage may now meet each other via the television screen. The parents of the bride, as well as the parents of the groom, may reside across the globe or in different corners of the same country, but with the help of video conferencing equipment they might as well just live next door. Families will now be able to meet and greet each other, and begin to form relationships that will be cemented later on when grandchildren are born and holiday visits may be planned.

As a matter of fact, there are already entrepreneurial immigrants who are pooling their resources to launch video conferencing centers that will permit local immigrants to come to a centrally located storefront and purchase an hour of video conferencing time. These immigrants also seek to set up similar centers in other parts of the world to allow family members to visit a center at the same time, and thus allow a videoconference to take place.

In many places of the world, especially third world countries, the technology to facilitate these virtual meetings is hard to come by and even harder to maintain. Yet for the successful entrepreneur, this kind of business may soon prove to be a goldmine.

Families will gladly save up the fees for and hour or two of video conferencing time in order to reconnect with friends and families from all over the world. Considering that video conferences are not limited to only two parties, it is obvious that as many groups as feasible could eventually participate in one conference, and virtual family reunions may not be a thing of the distant future anymore.

Video Conferencing: A Productivity Tool To Boost Business Profits

Jim Brown asked:

For both small and large businesses, video conferencing is becoming one of the leading tools for communication. Video conferencing is a form of telecommunication that utilizes both audio and video for a virtual meeting. This basically involves either two people having a simple conversation referred to as P2P or point to point or it could be multi-point involving several different locations with many people linked together for the virtual meeting.

As technological advances continue to improve in the field of video conferencing, more and more businesses are trying to integrate this communication tool into their communication systems. But some may be hesitant to upgrade their system especially if they are not too familiar with how this type of system works and on whether or not it brings numerous benefits to their specific type of business. Your business’ particular situation though may benefit from the advantages that video conferencing has to offer.

Businesses that have multiple offices at various locations both locally or worldwide can benefit from video conferencing. In such a scenario, it is not uncommon to have regular regional meetings where office or department managers may have to travel to a particular location to take part in such. Apart from the travel expenses, pre-meeting preparations such as the paperwork to be distributed, emailed or post mailed can cost money as well and have to be considered too. Both time and money are saved if meetings are held via video conferencing with all the pertinent information needed to be taken up being displayed on the screen and all parties involved being able to interact even without being physically present in one room.

Video Conferencing can assist as well in your dealings with business partners, investors and those who you potentially think will be interested in doing business with you, most especially if they are located abroad. Important business matters can be easily discussed without having to schedule a meeting that requires some partners or associates to travel. You not only get full access to all of your business materials, you save money on travel and lodging expenses.

Many businesses are beginning to incorporate this technology and so you should consider installing a video conferencing system as well. Video conferencing equipment prices are starting to decrease and as more businesses are using such a technology to conduct regular virtual meetings, sooner or later you may have to upgrade your communication system as well.

Video Conferencing Makes Doing Business Easier

Ajeet Khurana asked:

Twenty years ago no one would have ever dreamt of something as sophisticated as video conferencing, but today this is a really convenient way to do business. More and more businesses are taking advantage of this high tech ability to do business even if they are half a world away from one another. When you have the need to speak with people from other offices, even if they are in different parts of the world, video conferencing makes it simple and straightforward.

Benefits of Video Conferencing

Many businesses have adopted video conferencing because they believe that it actually increases production. When people are able to meet face to face in their respective offices or locations and brainstorm or simply see eye to eye on topics it will energize everyone involved in any given project, which generally results in more productivity. This is something that more businesses are picking up and they like the increase in productivity so much that they are willing to continue the video conferences for that benefit alone.

Another aspect that a lot of corporations like about video conferencing is that it can actually save money. The reason for this is that people from different offices no longer need to be in the same geographical location to get things done together. Instead employees can meet and discuss things, even share physical progress on projects because they are linked via video. Video conferencing is much more economical than flying several employees to another location, paying for lodging and food. This is simply a more efficient means of communication.

One more benefit of video conferencing that cannot be overlooked is that it actually saves time. Sounds odd, but when you consider that employees will no longer need to spend work time traveling, there is time to be maximized. Employees will have a lot less travel time, which is usually time that cannot be utilized, and so more will be able to get done in less time. This goes hand in hand with saving money and an increase in productivity, since there will be more time to get things done in.

Video conferencing is relatively new to the world of business but it works. There are many different services that will provide video conferencing capabilities to businesses, whether they need the service once a month or once a day. Shop around a bit to see what is out there and how video conferencing can benefit your business. You’ll likely be impressed at how easy it is to set up these services and put them to use for your company. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re involved in, chances are that you can use video conferencing services to build a better business.
